PPO vs HDHP

I’m in the middle of Open Enrollment period and I’m considering changing my plan benefits this year.

Breakdown:

I have chronic health conditions that usually send me well into the hundreds of thousands (and sometimes into the million) range in total healthcare costs over any given year. I have probably 10 prescriptions that I’m on regularly, plus regular doctor visits and other things.

In the past, I’ve always chosen the PPO plan due to the common ideal that PPO should be selected if you see a doctor often and HDHP should be selected if you don’t due to the nature of HDHP having higher deductibles and OOP max.

However, in the case of the plans available to me through my employer, the OOP max on the HDHP plans are actually lower than the PPO.

Here’s the breakdown:

PPO Premium HSA Value HSA Deductible $1,500 $3,500 $5,000 OOP Max $6,600 $6,350 $6,250 Primary Care $40 Deductible, then 10% Deductible, then 30% Specialist $60 Deductible, then 10% Deductible, then 30% Hospital Deductible, then 20% Deductible, then 10% Deductible, then 30% Prescriptions $10/$30/$50 Deductible, then $10/$30/$50 Deductible, then $10/$30/$50 FSA/HSA Contribution No employer contribution $1,000 employer contribution $1,500 employer contribution Premium per pay period $145.34 $120.28 $111.25

Based on the fact that the OOP Max is actually lower for the HSA plans, would it make more sense for me to go with one of those?
