Previous insurance and employer arguing over premiums (USA)

Edit: State is OH

Health insurance is a maze of absolute horseshit, and I am in way over my head here. This is the situation:

I had a Marketplace plan through CareSource from 2018-January 2020. I would pay it on my company card each month and send the bill to my boss.

Starting in February 2020, he switched us (small company – ~12 employees) to a group plan through Aetna. I asked (in person and verbally, unfortunately) if I should call CareSource and cancel my plan – he said just to ignore the bills and they would eventually cancel. This seemed weird, but I figured he knew what he was talking about.

In early March, I was still getting bills for my premium from CareSource, so I called and cancelled myself.

Continuing after that, I’m still getting a bill from them for 1 month of premiums, for February.

My boss insists that there’s no reason he should have to pay this, because he was already paying for our group plan in February. CareSource insists that they provided me services in February (although I didn’t go to a doctor or use my insurance at all), and thus are owed $400.

Additionally, there were a few coworkers who didn’t have this happen – I’m not sure if it’s because they just ignored the bills, or what.

I feel like there’s no way out of this besides just shelling out $400 myself – both sides feel completely justified. Where do I go from here?
