Hi, I was referred to a fertility clinic and the clinic gave me 4-6 pages of paperwork to read and sign. Most of it has to do with accepting legal ownership of any unpaid balance that my insurance doesn’t cover, and how I understand that it is my responsibility to find out what my plan will cover. I called my insurance company and they said that the clinic will send over prior auth and if they are in network and I have prior auth, all I will pay is my specialist co-pay.
I feel like there is some catch, because I see people with insurance saying they ended up owing so many thousands of dollars for fertility treatments after insurance paid their part.
I am afraid because I have had a similar situation 5-6 years ago, with a different provider, and the insurance company told me the same thing, but I still get a $7k bill once a year. When I get it, I call the specialist’s office, and they send me to “billing’s voicemail”, but I never hear back. They have not sent it to collections and it is not on my credit report, but once per year they send me this huge bill that my insurance says I am not responsible for.
How can I make sure that I don’t accept any billable service that will leave me in debt?
Advice?
