I’m posting this here because I don’t know who to turn to. I also have no idea if I even have any options for being able to successfully get out of this situation. As a last-ditch effort, I’d like your input.
I’ll try to keep things outlined fairly simply. I recently got a new job that I started on October 18th. I ended with my previous company on October 15th. That Friday (October 15th) marked the middle of a pay period, which ended on the 22nd of October. When I started with that company, 3 years prior, my health insurance coverage started on day 1.[It was my first full-time job and prior to that I was on Medicaid. When I started Medicaid, they backdated coverage. I don’t recall if my company (the one I just left) offered backdated coverage when I started. However, a lot of that is beside the point. I’m just trying to provide context.]
Moving on, the health insurance at my new company did not become active until 11/1. On October 29th, I found out my Mom had COVID. Since I saw her a few days prior, I knew I needed to get tested. Up till that point, I was lucky enough to never have to worry about how the tests were paid for, I just knew that they were paid for. I didn’t realize that some places could offer COVID tests for free and others could charge you.
Here lies my dilemma: I got the COVID test done on October 29th. I was under the false assumption that it would be covered regardless of whether it was by my old company or my new company’s insurance backdating it. Come to find out, my new company doesn’t backdate their coverage and my coverage with the old company expired on the 22nd. So, here I am stuck with a $500 bill for a COVID test. That is A LOT of money for me. I’m having a hard time saying, “oh well, I messed up, I’ll just pay this and move on”. It’s $500!!!! In the middle of a pandemic. WTF. It’s just absurd to me. It certainly opened my eyes to a few different things.
Bottom line, I want to know if I have any options to fight this or if I’m better off finding the $500 somewhere to throw in the garbage for this bill.
I appreciate your time in advance.
