Reference based billing

Reference priced billing

I could really use some advice! I am having an issue between the Hospital I had surgery at and my insurance provider. I had surgery at the end of September. I just received the bill because they were going back and forth on it for months. According to my insurance member hand book it should have cost a $500 copay. But I am being charged $20,000. I understand that this is due to reference pricing and that I am being balance billed. I did not know that the hospital I went to had the choice to not pay the reference price. If I had known, I would not have had the surgery. I am also working with my insurance company on this and will likely file an appeal. And I emailed the hospital patient advocate. I feel like this is an issue between my insurance provider and the hospital and I am the one who is getting the brunt of it. I am not sure what to do or if there is anything else I can do. I really hope someone can give me some advice!
