I was on my parent’s insurance plan until I turned 26 in September. I arranged to enroll on my employer’s plan starting the next month. From July – September, I received medical services, and they were all shown as covered by the insurance plan when I received them.
Recently, I learned that the health insurance plan was retroactively terminated in January 2021 to an effective termination date of 6/30/2020 by my parent’s HR Benefits department. Since I was not the plan subscriber, I was not notified of this termination.
I have started a request with my employer to backdate their insurance coverage, but since the date is so long ago now, they are reluctant to fulfill the request. It would be a special request up to the discretion of a manager.
Because I have a difficult relationship with my parent, I’ve so far been unable to get more information (required for the employer backdating request) about this termination of healthcare coverage.
I am shocked to learn that it is possible for my health insurance to be retroactively terminated without notification. I now have a 3-month gap in health care coverage and many bills. I know that I can negotiate with providers to reduce these costs.
What are my options for restoring health insurance coverage during this period?
TLDR: I was a dependent of a health insurance plan which was retroactively terminated in January 2021 to an effective termination date of 6/30/2020. I now have many bills due to a 3 month gap in health insurance coverage that I was never notified about. What are my options for restoring health insurance coverage during this period?
