School terminated health insurance

I’m hoping this is the right place to post this kind of question. I’ve done some googling and can’t really find a good answer.

I and several of my classmates (medical student) pay for insurance through our school. We recently learned that our health insurance had been terminated-not from our school, but because one of our classmates had gone to the doctor and was told her insurance wasn’t active. My friend called the insurance company and was told that our health insurance was terminated on January 31, 2022 of this year and that there was no active policy or pending policy. When I checked my online account, it also said I have no active plan. I went to pick up a prescription yesterday and was also told my insurance wasn’t active. Of course we were angry and started emailing our school, who said there were delays in enrolling us but we are covered by insurance. They also tried to say that the delays in enrolling us were due to students not indicating whether they were studying on campus or remotely this semester. They also said that we could get a copy of our ‘new’ health insurance card, however when I asked for mine, I never heard back.

We pay for health insurance each semester so I already paid when I paid for my tuition. Is there anything we can do in this situation legally? I feel like it is so negligent of them to just terminate our insurance with no notice, what if someone were to have a life threatening emergency? Is any of what my school is saying make sense? Most of the administrative staff at my school is extremely incompetent so I don’t trust them.
