Hi, I was let go from my employer on 8/18. I was told my insurance will continue until 8/31. I am eligible for COBRA (but I know I have to pay for it).
My questions are more on how it actually works.
I am $100 away from meeting my out of pocket expense on the BCBS PPO plan I had with my employer. I was planning on getting a surgery in September.
Does this mean I have to apply for COBRA asap? I saw that it’s 60 days retroactive – so what happens if I don’t elect COBRA until end of September? How does my doctor know how to bill me if I don’t have active insurance? Will COBRA extend my current insurance plan with the $100 balance on my out of pocket max and retroactively apply the benefits to my surgery cost?
I’m confused as to what I need to do. I don’t want to end up with a $18,000 bill from the hospital for my surgery.
What should I do to ensure my current insurance plan continues under COBRA?
