I’m a 26 year old about to get booted off the family plan, trying to decide whether or not I should buy my own plan (not eligible through work). I’ve tried googling around to find some sort of calculator that could help with this decision, but everything I’ve seen is telling me things like “You should definitely sign up for insurance, because otherwise you may incur large unexpected healthcare costs!”, like I’m some kind of idiot five year old.
A catastrophic coverage plan would probably be the simplest to analyze. This would have a deductible of $8,550, so would be worth, at most, my net worth – $8,550. Given the risks of a typical 26 year old, what percentage of my net worth should I be willing to pay for that kind of coverage? The best offer I’ve found so far would have annual premiums of $2,220.
The ‘bronze tier’ plans offer more coverage than the catastrophic plans, but it seems like they’re mostly just acting as middlemen. Is there reason to think that they offer better value than a catastrophic coverage plan?
I currently have a prescription for Vyvanse, which also complicates things. I wouldn’t be averse to switching to Adderall if I were to go uninsured however.
