Should I get insurance or just pay whatever penalty fee imposed over me

Hi, I am living in NYC and enrolled in healthfirst, but since I got a 1-year contract with a better salary, I no longer qualify for my previous plan, and now the cheapest one will cost me around $400. I got lucky this year because of this contract, but that doesn’t guarantee that I am in a position where I will pay $400/month comfortably next year; what if I can’t find a good or any contract next year, what if my finances no longer reflect my current salary? Will I be stuck paying these $400/month?.

I am in my 30’s and feel pretty healthy; not only that, but I think I can travel to my home country to be checked there, so is it a good idea to not enroll on any plan, pay whatever penalty fee and still save money? Or should I get it no matter what?

Thank you!
