Long story short, my son was born on 10/16 last year while we had COBRA through Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. It took us a few weeks to gather his social security card, birth certificate, etc to get insurance started for him mid November. According to his card, his insurance started 11/1/2021. The insurance for some reason covered about 25% of his expenses from this time when we were in the hospital, even though the claims are all from 10/16. There is roughly 17,000 dollars left in expenses that the insurance company denied saying he did not have coverage during 10/16 at the time.
The hospital is then coming after us for the remainder of the balance saying the insurance denied it, so we owe it.
I’ve tried calling both my insurance, and the hospital to explain the situation, and neither seems to be helpful. I just don’t understand how my wife and I were fully insured, gave birth to our son, and we still somehow owe the full amount because no one wants to take responsibility for it. I have called the firm (benefit focus) who helped us sign up for COBRA, and they claim they will mediate with the insurance company and hospital to try to reduce these charges and get them covered.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
