I’ve stuck with Molina for several years now because it saves me ~$100/mo and under normal circumstances I rarely go to the doctor. This year, however, I did have a minor GI issue which required a specialist. Molina gave me about a dozen GI doctors to choose from, all except three had poor reviews.
Long story short, all three of those doctors (specifically their offices) turned out to be awful and it made me question if I want to stick with Molina because if I were to develop a serious health issue the last thing I’d want to do is have to deal with incompetent office staff who don’t answer the phone or return calls like I did with all of the doctors who accept Molina insurance. But I also know that dealing with ANY bureaucracy, especially in the American healthcare system isn’t going to be fun. Also, it should be noted that I’ve had zero issues in terms of Molina actually paying out claims – and I had a lot over the past year.
I’m in my mid-thirties so maybe I should consider shifting from lowest possible cost to best possible treatment if a serious issue were to arise. Which insurance (under $300/mo) would provide that?
I had been under the impression UCSD was the best, however their website states for Covered CA the only option is Blue Shield PPO which is close to $600/mo so that can be ruled out.
Monthly cost for platinum HMO plans through Covered CA:
Molina (2/5 stars) $125
Blue Shield (3/5 stars) $224
Sharp (5/5 stars) $230 Premier / $261 Performance (any insight as to the differences between these two?)
Kaiser (5/5 stars) $243
Health Net (3/5 stars) $277
