Taking it up the butt for my colonoscopy: $11,464.23 hospital bill for 30 minutes of fun

Hi All, when scheduling my regular screening colonoscopy, I provided my insurance card to the doctor. His intake person checked the insurance and said it was covered and that no pre-approval was necessary so I didn’t call my insurance company myself.

The claim was rejected by the insurer (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona) saying that the hospital itself was out of network therefore required pre-authorization so $0 would be covered. I got a bill directly from the hospital (who I also provided with my health insurance information upon making the appointment and upon check in and assumed they …. ummm….. checked it?)

Bill is $11,464.23. Any advice about how to best fight this? I can appeal through my insurance company …. but …. if the mistake was made by my doctor’s office, where do I even start with fighting this or getting the amount reduced? If I call the hospital and beg might they at least reduce the amount? I’ve never had anything like this happen before so feel clueless and dumb about what to do.

Thanks in advance!!!!!
