Hi all, I have a question about dental insurance and hope that this is the right forum…please lmk if I’m in the wrong place.
I (44F, Florida) signed up for ACA coverage starting January 2021 and got a regular medical policy through Avmed and a separate PPO dental policy through Florida Combined Life. I switched both for 2022 and have a PPO plan with Delta Dental.
The DD policy has a waiting period for some treatments that can be waived if I can prove comparable coverage for 2021. I recently started the waiver request process and discovered that the ACA/Avmed plan I selected 1.5 years ago for 2021 actually included a dental plan as well, through Delta Dental. So I actually had two dental policies during 2021, the Florida Combined Life policy that I’d chosen plus the Delta Dental plan that was apparently automatically attached to my Avmed Medical policy (I was completely unaware that this plan even existed until I logged in to Delta Dental’s site last month and saw records of coverage for 2021).
I hope that made sense, as I’m still confused by the fact that I was even able to sign up for a second dental plan after I’d already chosen a medical plan that included dental.
That 2021 Delta Dental policy was evidently garbage and wouldn’t have covered anything other than cleanings and basics, so I don’t think I will get a waiting period waiver based on that. My FL Combined coverage was very good however.
Questions:
1) Is it a problem to have dual plans like that? I never filed a claim or anything with DD for 2021 obviously since I had no clue I had it, but I did get have work and cleanings and such covered through Florida Combined.
2) If I send in a waiver request along with proof that I had coverage through FL Combined will that trigger any issues or penalties for the ultimate sin of having two dental plans?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help, and my apologies if I’ve posted this in the wrong place.
