UHC Not Covering “Out of Network” Anesthesiologist During Emergency Surgery

Hi All –

My spouse and I have United Healthcare insurance through his work. I had surprise(!) gallbladder surgery in September. We received a variety of several hundred dollar invoices (surgeon, radiology, etc all bill separately from the hospital) after that that we’ve already paid. But we just got hit with a doozy from the anesthesiologist for almost $3k that has been denied by our insurance.

UHC says that while the hospital was in network the subcontractor anesthetist that was on call was out of network and UHC is not covering any of this bill. It’s not like I had any choice in my providers or any prior knowledge as I went in to the ER that morning and was under the knife that afternoon.

Is there anything I can do or say when I contact UHC to make them pay it? Like, what are we even paying insurance for if it doesn’t cover emergencies?!
