Unaffordable health care but not really

Panicking right now (as seems standard with health insurance). I just got married to my SO! She is trying to make it as an artist right now and I support us. She was on OHP but will no longer qualify now that we are married. I make $76060 a year and she made $1000 last year. The pandemic hit her pretty hard because her main income was from wine an paint classes so it’s down A LOT from the 2019 era.

The problem is that I can’t afford to put her on my company provided health insurance. I pay $86.61 a month for my health insurance and $6.94 for dental. My company pays 75% of health coverage costs for me. Adding my wife to the plan makes things go crazy. The company only puts an additional $100 towards the plan bringing the health insurance monthly premium I pay to $706.12 and dental at $57.81. That’s just over 8 times the cost. Or, almost 11% of my monthly income…

Being stupid and uninformed I thought we could purchase health insurance through the marketplace with some additional tax help because the plan is greater than 9.83% of my income. We applied and to my surprise we were denied tax help. Reading deeper I found out that unaffordable plans are only determined by the single employee premium and mine is pretty damn cheap.

If I had known this before we probably wouldn’t have gotten married. We mostly got married so I could start paying $500 a month to her $50,000 of student loan debt which is accruing interest very quickly again. Now just to be sure my wife has health insurance I can’t start paying her loan and need to find an additional $100 on top.

What can we do? This seems rigged. Send help.

Edit: We’re both 28 and live in Oregon. I work for a company with fewer than 20 employees.
