Unpaid Health insurance premiums

I got married at the end of last year and switched to my wife’s health insurance through work. I got some notices about how my plan would be terminated for non payment as of 12/31/2020, so I assumed that was correct and moved on. Yes, I should have called to explicitly cancel but there’s a lot going on lately so it slipped. I finally called in today and they’re saying that backdating the cancellation is at their discretion. I’m still waiting to find out how that goes.

Assuming they say that I do still owe them premiums for this year, what are the negative consequences? Can they send a bill to collections? Will it impact my credit report?

  • Initial coverage was through BCBS of GA purchased directly from them
  • I have coverage through a different provider as of December last year
  • No claims since summer last year
  • I have messages from them going back to December saying my coverage would be terminated as of 12/31/2020
