Variable income for adjunct professor – not sure what to do for enrollment

Hi all! I just graduated with my PhD in August and have been on my parents’ insurance (I’m 29, but their insurance allowed me to stay while a student if we paid more in taxes) but it’s now ending this month. I’m trying to navigate enrollment but all of my options seem bad so I thought I’d ask here. Here’s my info:

Age: 29 State: TX Nothing special I need covered, no medication

My issue is that I am adjuncting this spring but only one class right now ($3500). I’m hoping to get another but won’t know until January. I also have no idea what will happen after the spring – if I’ll have a more permanent position or not, or if I’ll be able to adjunct again in the fall. This makes it very difficult to determine my income. I filled out the ACA application with a guess ($7000) and got told I would have to pay full price for any plan (since I’m below FPL).

I know to get a discount I have to make more than $12k since Texas doesn’t have expanded Medicaid. I might make that this year…but I might not. I’ve been saving and could afford rent all year even if I don’t get a better job (if I live quite cheaply). I don’t want to claim I’m going to make $12k to get the discount and then not make that.

Is this my only option? I want to make sure I’m not missing anything here. Thanks in advance for any help!!
