Hello everyone.
I’m a full-time student living in Rhode Island, 28 y.o. I am employed part time and have no benefits offered through my job. In addition to that job, my husband and I run a small business in the summers (very small- just the two of us and one other person). He just got a full-time job working for UPS through the winter and we dont know what the benefits are going to look like yet, or if there are benefits at all.
This year my income will be about 17k and his will be around 30k.
I haven’t had insurance since I was in high school on my parents plan, and I recently had to have shoulder surgery for a dislocated shoulder/broken clavicle that I paid for out of pocket, with family help. I need a second surgery soon to get the metal plate out of my shoulder, and I’m not going to have any family help this time. The surgery + the x-rays and dr visits ran about $14k out of pocket; I imagine the second surgery will be similar, and it needs to happen within the next couple of months.
I’ve been looking at the RI marketplace for options and it seems VERY expensive. The website said that I’m not eligible for any tax credits, so I’d be paying $500 to $600 a month, plus several thousand dollar deductibles. Until I finish my accounting degree in a year and a half, we are living paycheck to paycheck and after bills are paid we do not have that kind of extra money at the end of the month.
I guess my question is – am I missing something? Do these prices seem normal? The other option I’m considering is taking out a loan and paying for the surgery out of pocket.
Edit: I want to add on that I work for Jackson Hewitt as a tax preparer, and they informed me that even if I increased my hours to work full-time, they would not offer benefits. From what I’ve read, this doesn’t seem legal. How are they able to get away with this?
