Vision-specific insurance vs. medical insurance mistake: any hope of reimbursement after the fact?

Hi all! 3 months ago I visited an optometrist who I (and their office) thought contracted with my vision insurance. Unfortunately at the end of the visit when the office staff rang everything up they discovered that my vision plan would pay almost nothing towards the exam, leaving me with a very large bill. At the time I wasn’t asked about what medical insurance I had. I just discovered that this optometrist is in network for my Aetna plan, and most of the visit cost would have been covered. Salt in the wound is that I now also see Aetna listed on the optometrist’s website as an insurance they will take.

I’m kicking myself for not asking them to try my Aetna insurance instead of my vision insurance. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it! If I submitted a claim to Aetna, do you think there is hope of getting reimbursed? I plan to discuss this with the optometry clinic and Aetna, but imagine it will take a while to get an answer given the holidays etc. Anyone have any experience with this type of situation? Thanks so much for reading!
