Wellness Exam doesn’t include bloodwork? Or talking about health concerns?

So I haven’t been to the doctor in a long time. Probably 4 years or so. My last doctor allowed me to talk about a variety of issues and even ordered bloodwork “just because.”

I made an appointment for a Wellness Exam because it was a new doctor and figured that they wouldn’t see me for my real issue (my back) unless it was during a Wellness Exam. I also figured that during a Wellness Exam I could bring up any of my health concerns so I would just discuss my back during the exam.

Turns out that a Wellness Exam doesn’t go over any health concerns lol. I wasn’t allowed to talk about my back issues during a Wellness because they can’t bill it for both things. They had to be two separate appointments. So I just made the appt for my back since that was the more pressing issue.

Also I thought that bloodwork was a routine part of a Wellness or Physical too. Turns out that’s not true also. My doctor refuses to order bloodwork unless I have an actual medical reason to. But how are you supposed to prevent health issues without knowing where your CBC, glucose, etc levels are at?

I have Mercy Care insurance btw if it matters. Poor people insurance for Arizona residents, basically.
