I’m not enrolled in a marketplace plan right now. Though, I will have to enroll in one soon since I’m losing my current non-marketplace (ACA compliant) coverage in April. I’m browsing through plans and they want to me to give them my income to determine subsidy amount.
My income varies year by year. It’s not predictable.
Here are some numbers to give you an idea:
- 2009 – $160k
- 2010 – $312k
- 2011 – $63k
- 2012 – $86k
- 2013 – $42k
- 2014 – $12k
- 2015 – $6k
- 2016 – $11k
- 2017 – $37k
- 2018 – $51k
- 2019 – $98k
- 2020 – $33k
I have no way of knowing how much money I’ll make until I actually make it. I don’t have a salary.
What should I project my income to me for health insurance purposes?
If I estimate it as less, will I owe the difference? How does that work? Is that part of my tax return or something? Is there a penalty for estimating less than your actual income or do I just owe the difference?
If I estimate it as more, will I get a refund? How does that work?
