What happens when you purchase an expensive preferred brand drug that will put you over your deductible (when the drug is very cheap after ded)?

Say I’m $50 from meeting my deductible and I need to purchase a preferred brand prescription drug that costs $300 with a goodrx coupon. Preferred brands under my plan will cost me $20 after deductible.

Does the portion of the cost beyond the deductible get automatically reduced to $20? So ~$70 instead of $300?

Or is this something I need to workout ahead of time with insurance provider?
