What is having an HMO actually like?

I understand the concept that it is a restricted network that only covers you if you stay within it. However, what does that actually mean? Do you have to constantly check that you’re staying in network because accidentally seeing someone out of it is really risky? If your HMO doctor refers you to someone, can you trust that they are also in network or are you having to constantly check? What if you have an emergency? I’m always stressed that I’m actually not covered with my current PPO and trying to figure out if it’s easier or harder to be sure you’re covered under an HMO.
