Hello! I’ll try to summarize everything as quick as possible Age: 23, State: AL, income: $28,000
Got a new job, they offer two plans
Plan 1 (Basic plan): Covers prescriptions, doctors visits, urgent cares, and labs including covid tests. This plan costs $46 per week/ $184 per month. This plan does not cover anything that I have not listed
Plan 2 (High deductible plan): I pay for everything out of pocket until till I hit $5,000 deductible. After i reach deductible limit I wouldn’t have to pay a single penny for anything according to plan. The only thing I would get for free is a physical. This plan costs a whopping $96 per week/ $384 per month
I have a preexisting condition of Epilepsy. Not a single seizure in over 2 years since i got on medicine which costs $19 for around 2 months for prescription. But the one time I had a seizure I was left with a $40,000 bill due to needing an EEG and some other scan as well as an overnight stay in the hospital. thankfully because I wasn’t from the area, I didn’t have to pay anything if you can believe that. I also have a rare heart condition called Brugada Syndrome which is an irregular heartbeat that’s only real side effect is cardiac arrest but its unlikely. wore a heart beat monitor for a month and didn’t need a pacemaker.
Anyways, I’ve never had health insurance in my life and I need to go see a neurologist and cardiologist to check on how my health is. I just don’t feel like either plan offered by my work is desirable at all. The $96 per week would tie us down financially and make it uncomfortable. We wouldn’t be able to have the money to see the doctors that I need to see for my checkups. But the other plan makes it so where if there was an emergency, I’d be in debt for a long time.
What should I do… Do I get one of these plans or should I do something until open enrollment comes around like “sidecar health”. Would open enrollment provide options that would be more fair? I don’t know much about anything in the health insurance field but I need help so me and my wife can be covered if we get into a bind. (I also don’t qualify for aca or anything from what I have seen)
