I’m a resident of California, currently have medical insurance under my FT job. I plan on quitting my job in mid-Jan 2021, to go to a nursing program (full time prgm conflicts with my work). I’m required to have medical insurance when I go to into the program.
California Marketplace’s open enrollment period ends in Dec 15 for medical insurance coverage starting in January 2021. Based on what I read on another forum California has an extended period from Nov 1- Jan 31. There’s also a separate exemption if you have a change in employment status but I’m not too clear on that.
I want to make sure I’m covered for school/life’s emergencies and planning on applying to Medical or a ACA/marketplace plan since I plan on getting a PT job asap( 20-29 hours a week or less) and will be unemployed when I quit my job. When should I apply for medical insurance since it will be required for my program but I don’t plan on quitting my job until mid January. Should or Can I even apply now but since I’m still employed full time (& have insurance through work) and my income would exceed the amounts. Do I wait til I quit and finish my last day at work? I don’t want to delay in getting medical insurance for my nursing program as it is challenging enough with new changes/protocol during the pandemic. Please advise? Thanks
