Wife’s student health insurance will *not* cover newborn in the first 30 days

[We’re in CA]

My wife in in school, and was told by her student health insurance plan that they will *not* cover our newborn (due in March) for the first 30 days, unlike most plans.

I am separately enrolled in an ACA plan. My understanding is that I will be able to enroll our newborn as a dependent on my own plan, and that as long as I do so within 30 days it will be retroactive to our baby’s birth date.

Is my understanding right? Does my wife’s lack of coverage in those first 30 days present any issue, or are we good as long as we enroll in a plan within 30 days?
