I have BCBS of Texas Blue Advantage Silver HMO plan. Six months ago my PCP wrote a referral to my current neurologist who has excellent reviews. This neurologist then wrote an order for me to start IVIG infusion therapy through an infusion company that comes to my house. Unfortunately, I just found out that my neurologist is retiring on Jan 3, 2022.
I have a highly complex, rare neurological disease called CIDP that took years to diagnose properly after many doctors in the past incorrectly diagnosed me. Because it is rare and I went through series of nightmare doctors in the past I am picky about who I want to take over my care now that my current neurologist is retiring.
I was told that my current neurologist’s colleague will take over my care. Unfortunately, she has terrible reviews and is the only one at that intuition that is taking over. I am definitely going to give her a try however, there are a couple of other neurologists that may be better to treat me that I know of. In an ideal world, I would like to have an appointment with these two other ones just to see how they are because you never know how a doctor is until you have an appointment with them.
However, since I have an HMO plan, my PCP would have to write referrals for me to see either one or both of these other neurologists. My PCP has absolutely no problem doing this.
However the question is:
Do you know if my HMO insurance would approve me seeing one or two other neurologists if my PCP wrote referrals for them? Would it also cancel out my current neurologist and my IVIG treatment that I am receiving from my current neurologist? I absolutely do not want that to happen.
NOTE: I already called my insurance, BCBSTX, and asked them these questions and spoke to multiple people. They were vague answering and would not tell me if other neurologists would be approved at the same time or if they would cancel out my current neurologists approved referral. Also, I do not want to pay out of pocket to see these other ones. They are 500 – 1,000 dollars per visit for new patients. I can’t afford that.
Thanks!
