Topic: health insurance & corporate benefits
I am in full blown panic mode right now and can’t seem to figure out a resolution. I joined a new company in February of this year and enrolled my partner & I in health benefits once I started. We work with Trinet for our benefits which means we had a marketplace of health insurance options to choose from. Trinet processes our benefits as well as our payroll. I spent HOURS comparing costs & coverage options and settled on a plan that would cost my partner & I ~$65 per pay period (so ~$130/month) after my company’s contribution. I just recently discovered that trinet has been charging me ~$375 per pay period for this health plan (so ~$750/month)! I am LIVID! We can’t afford that plan and never would have enrolled in it had I known this would be the true cost.
When I called Trinet they told me that the plan cost was inaccurately reflected when I enrolled and that I have to pay $375 per pay period in order to be on this plan. I have a proof of my enrollment and the amounts I agreed to pay (including their email confirmation) but they’re basically telling me tough luck. My only option is to open a case to try to get them to allow me to enroll in a plan with lower coverage. This may take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to be approved, and until then I have to keep paying the $750/month.
My other major issue is that I’ve been paying towards my deductible for a knee surgery I have coming up and enrolling in a different plan could end up costing me tons of money and I’m not sure my doctor would take the new plan. So I’m panicking wondering if I need to postpone surgery (it’s on May 4th) because I have no idea what’s happening with my benefits.
If you’ve gotten this far, thank you so much. I just feel like they’re trying to bully me into paying for their mistake (clearly their system was glitching) and I’m already out over $1400 because of this. Since they are our payroll processor I have no way of stopping them from making additional deductions. I tried to get my company’s HR rep involved but she’s really not a kind or helpful person and basically told me there’s nothing she can do and that I need to work with trinet. This has to be illegal though right? They can’t just take money out of my paycheck without my permission. Ugh I feel so helpless and stressed 😭
