I am currently 25 years old and live in Virginia. I currently have healthcare coverage through my mom’s work but I want to enroll in healthcare coverage through my work since I will be turning 26 towards the start of February. If I enroll in one of my employer’s healthcare plans during my work’s open enrollment period but my parents don’t drop me from their coverage what happens? Is it legal to be covered under two plans at once – be it for a brief period of time?
It’s my understanding that I could just wait until the special enrollment period when I turn 26 to get health coverage through my work, but I don’t want to risk having any gaps in coverage.
