Coverage for Newborn

Not sure if ya’ll can help me but even a suggestion of where/ who to contact would be a HUGE help.

I’m set to be induced on 11/22 (less than 2 weeks). I chose to do a month of my previous insurance under COBRA and will join my work insurance on Dec 1. My COBRA policy is extending my benefits as a dependent on my dad’s plan. (I turned 26 in October and paid out of pocket to extend to Nov 30 because the coverage is WAY better than what I’m offered through work and my doctors would be out of network).

I was told by HR that if my baby does not have insurance elsewhere from the day he’s born until my work policy is active- he cant be added to my plan at all until open enrollement in August because he wont have a “qualifying event” unless I have a policy active with them from Nov 1 (which would make my COBRA plan secondary and end up costing me a TON).

I’m not worried about the insurance for the 7ish days my son wont have insurance (set up a payment plan for his hospital bill)- but it doesnt sound right that I wont be able to enroll him AT ALL???? I thought you had 30 days from a “qualifying event” (like being born) to enroll in a new health insurance plan- so I was planning on starting my plan with work on Dec. 1st and adding him as a dependent on the plan.

My yearly income is too high for medicaid or WIC, I dont want to enroll myself in any other insurance until Dec 1, and I cant officially enroll him in an insurance plan until he’s born.
