COVID test – out of network lab

I am based in Washington, DC and have health insurance coverage through work (CareFirst). In Dec 2021, I visited my parents in another state, and got a COVID test while there. I got an explanation of benefits from my health insurer today, saying that I am responsible for $150. (Insurance covered $150).

I did some research. My guess based on what I know right now is that the my test was sent to an out of network lab and that’s why I’m being hit with this hefty bill. (news story about this). Any tips for how to not have to pay the $150? CareFirst has an appeals process that I’m looking into right now.
