First time without insurance. (NY)

Hey all, so this is the first time I’ll be without insurance. My insurance will expire at the end of this year. I get my insurance through my union but because I didnt work enough hours this year due to this virus, I won’t get coverage for all 2021. I spoke to them and they said that I could get under the COBRA plan which will run me around 800 a month, that just seems like too much for me. I was looking around to healthcare.gov but im confused about how this whole deductible thing works ork. For example, let’s say I choose a plan that has like 1000 dollar deductible . So does that mean if I go to the doctor at the beginning of the year and his cost to see him is 500, is that what I would pay when I get the bill until I reach the 1000 then id pay nothing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
