I have a Bluecross Blueshield PPO plan with a 4,500$ deductible (that has not been hit yet). My insurance is Illinois Bluecross Blueshield and the actual procedure was done in Maryland as I have recently moved.
I have severe PTSD which effects my sleep something I’m sure my health insurance has been made aware of through other charges and therapy situations I have been in. I had been previously prescribed sleeping medication that was not working for me and failed to assist with my sleeping issues to the point that it was effecting my day to day health. My primary physician told me in order to get sleeping medication I would have to undergo a sleep study. So I went into the sleep study after having everything preapproved by the sleep center with my insurance. I underwent the sleep study (Polysomnogram 4 or more rev coded 0740 HCPCS /rates 95810) and then received a bill for 2224.89$ Which I literally can not pay.
Upon inspection my insurance gave me a “discount coupon” of 30$~ on this bill for choosing an in network hospital but didn’t actually cover any of the actual bill. I have no idea what to do about this. I have yet to call the insurance because I want to make sure I’m prepared to contest it. I don’t know if I can “appeal” the payment because technically they did “cover” it just very little to the point where it doesn’t matter. I also don’t want them to tell me that I have to pay the full bill because I haven’t hit my deductible yet when in the past they cover a lot of procedures regardless of deductible. The remainder of what they don’t cover goes towards the deductible typically. So I’m at a loss at what my next steps should be. I’m slowly figuring out how to negotiate the payment with the hospital but what steps can I take with my insurance provider?
