Hello and thank you in advance for any insight here. I’m 49, and have been suffering from a variety of conditions such as low energy, difficulty concentrating, and depression. My PCP and I have been working through different ideas on what the cause could be, and I had blood work drawn to test for a low testosterone level. The test did indeed show very low levels and I was prescribed testosterone replacement injections, but Aetna denied it. I talked with my doctor and he said they wanted details on the cause of the low levels and so I went for lab draw again. Aetna again denied it, and this time sent me a letter to explain their decision. It said that they do not cover low testosterone due to natural aging. What caught my attention on the explanation letter was the first paragraph was a statement of how they never discriminate based on race, sex, national origin, or age. Now I expect the statement that they don’t discriminate based on age applies to another topic, but I found it ironic for the first paragraph to say they won’t discriminate based on age, and the second paragraph to say my claim is denied because the condition is caused by age.
So for those with more knowledge on the topic than myself, do I have a valid point for recourse?
