Insurance didn’t notify dentist that they were out of network?

Long story short: we have gone to the same dentist for years. Our insurance hasn’t changed for years. My kids and I went for our 6 month cleanings, received the estimated patient cost, showing insurance accepted. A month later I get a bill for $1200 stating UHC is out of network. The insurance company recommends filing a grievance against the dental office for failure to notify. The dentist office claims UHC “lied” and never told them they were out of network. What is the going consensus on how these things typically work? I realize now that I should have called insurance to verify before going to the dentist. I was too trusting. Hoping someone else has dealt with a situation like this and can give some guidance! Thank you in advance!
