I’m a 2nd year college student. To attend, we’re required to either enroll in a student health insurance plan, or provide proof of outside insurance. For years, I had thought I was covered under my parent’s plan. Come to find out, they removed me from their plan years ago (even though I was a minor at the time), gave me an old insurance card they found somewhere, and lied that it was active (because they “thought I deserved to struggle through medical bills like they did”).
I found out after receiving a threatening e-mail from my college demanding I find insurance or face disciplinary consequences. In a rush to find health insurance, I’ve found out just how fucking awful the U.S. healthcare system truly is. How the fuck do you enroll? What is with these insane premiums and eligibility requirements? How many hours do I have to spend on the medicaid phone line to get someone to answer? Why the hell are there so many plan types?
I’m on a full scholarship, and have essentially no income. I have no clue what to do. Despite spending hours researching, I still have no clue what I’m eligible for, what plans cover what, when I can enroll, etc. I can’t get ahold of anyone in my state to discuss enrolling in medicaid. I tried enrolling in my school’s student health insurance plan, but was told I’m too late, and now can’t get anyone to answer the phone.
I’m lost. I have no insurance. I just found out I owe insane amounts of money in hospital bills I had no clue about because I thought they were mostly covered under what turned out to be nonexistent insurance. It’s tanked my credit score. I need to see a doctor about a medical issue soon. I was also scheduled to see a dentist for the first time.
The U.S. is trash. The U.S. healthcare system is trash. It’s all so insanely frustrating. I just want to enroll in fucking health insurance. Is it that hard?
