The situation is that my spouse is a reservist in the military and will be deploying here in a few months (will be gone for approx 365 days). I’m currently covered under my employer’s health plan through United Healthcare. I also opted in to have secondary coverage through Tricare Reserve Select. In anticipation of the deployment, the TRS plan has automatically converted into Tricare Prime coverage. My understanding of the Tricare Prime benefits include $0 deductible, $0 co-pay, and essentially $0 out of pocket costs. My current UHC plan doesn’t cost me a monthly premium but it does have a $5,000 deductible, and I do pay co-pays and balances not covered by insurance. I’ve never met the deductible. (Maybe 2-3 Dr visits a year for a random cold, dermatology appt, and physical. Healthy with no co-morbidities or conditions.) We have been talking about starting a family so there may be future regular appointments, OB visits, and ultimately a delivery, which would come into play. (We aren’t preventing so theres a chance this could happen before deployment.)
I’m looking for advice on what I should do. My thoughts are to drop my UHC coverage while we have Tricare Prime. I can pick it back up when Tricare Prime ends upon spouse’s return to the states, or I can just stay on the Tricare Reserve Select once Prime ends. Or, I can resume my UHC plan.
If I keep both, UHC will be my primary and Tricare my secondary. Based on the coverage and benefits, it sounds like I should drop UHC to make Tricare my primary.
What I am not considering? Am I looking at this wrong?
Thanks for reading. Any opinions, insight, suggestions is appreciated! Happy to answer any questions.
TL;DR Should I go with Tricare Prime as my health insurance?
