First off, let me give a big thank you to the mods and contributors of this sub. I imagine most of the members of this sub are people like myself, people who searched for “health insurance” on reddit coming from a place of distress. This is a topic I don’t know much about but the information I’ve found here tonight has been clearer than any other source I’ve found on the internet. With that out of the way:
My dad is 62 years old, living in poverty, and having serious health problems. Most recently he is having prostate issues but he has other ongoing issues as well. He does not have health insurance and, as such, the only treatment he gets is from the occasional emergency room visit when things get so bad he _has_ to go.
The main reason he is living in poverty is because he has struggled with alcoholism for most of his adult life (he’s clean now, fortunately). As you can imagine, it’s been a rock relationship and there’s been a lot of times where he hasn’t been there for me, but I want to be there for him. I’m fortunate enough to have a high income and I want to find a way to help him get insured so he can start getting these issues regularly treated. Here are my main questions:
- The open enrollment period for the ACA is closed for 2021 in Virginia, correct? Is there any exception he might be able to use to get around that?
- Is it possible for him to qualify for medicaid? From what I was reading it seems like he needs to be below the poverty line and have a disability to qualify at his age. Is that correct? What types of illnesses might qualify?
- If neither of the above work, would he just need to wait until November 2021 and apply for ACA coverage? In the meantime could he just get a full price plan and I could pay the premiums? What are the options for a child to pay a parent’s health insurance premiums? Would I just need to transfer the money to him directly then have him pay them? Would that drive his income up and potentially cause him to no longer qualify for free insurance in 2022?
- Are there any other options we should be considering outside of what I’ve outlined above?
Sorry for so many questions and, again, thank you to everyone in this sub. Any advice is highly appreciated.
