Mother Lost Health Insurance After My Father Passed Away

Hi All,

My mother recently found out the company that my father was with before he passed away will be discontinuing their health insurance. My mother has been a stay-at-home mother since I was young (I’m now 30). I should mention that I live in the household. I am trying to figure out the best health insurance options. Medicaid was brought up, but we saw where they could potentially take your house. We live in Kentucky. My mom was also left with my father’s bank account which was pretty average (liveable) as he was retired. She now draws no sustainable income and is simply living off what is left. What are some options that we have? I am insured through my workplace, but of course, you cannot get coverage on a parent (I checked with HR). What are some recommendations? Are there plans out there that are affordable that won’t penalize her for having a decent amount in her checking account? Are there any options with low deductibles? At this point, I’m just looking for something that will be cheap enough for her to live on until she can draw medicare (she’s about 12 years out). What are your thoughts? I appreciate any answers in advance. I just can’t stand the thought of losing her because of a lack of insurance and she can’t stand the thought of losing the house because of this. I really appreciate your help.
