My bill is stuck in an admin void, so they won’t schedule new appointments

To preface, I started a new job in October 2020 and with it came a pay bump and a new insurance plan with Aetna. For the first time in my life, I had both an insurance plan that wasn’t complete garbage and the disposable income to make use of it, so I figured it was high time I started addressing my health.

The first few visits – dental, eye exam, general wellness checkup, lab for infection, etc, all went pretty smoothly where insurance was concerned, with my bill usually avaliable within 48 hours. Everything was going fine, making progress to get on a better path.

Then I decided to address my mental health and see a therapist. This was a month ago; the hospital says they can’t give me my bill because insurance hasn’t approved/denied the claim, and Aetna says they haven’t received a claim. Hospital won’t allow me to schedule another “behavioral health” appointment until billing is resolved, and neither the hospital nor Aetna will provide any cost estimates. (And knowimg the cost is important, since that will massively dictate how often I could see the counselor)

What might my paths forward be here? I’m at a loss how to resolve this.
