Hi everyone,
Maybe I just never understood how absurd medical insurance can be for some people, but with my previous employer (a large corporation with thousands of employees, so naturally they negotiated a pretty decent insurance plan), I paid a little over $200 per biweekly paycheck for my family’s coverage (myself, spouse, and one child). That included medical, dental, and vision, and basic life/AD&D was covered by my employer.
Now, as I’m reviewing benefits for the company from which I intend to accept a job offer — which, to be clear, is a much smaller company, so I expected at least marginally higher insurance costs — their BCBS medical insurance for my family (employee + spouse + kid[s]) is a ridiculous $510 and change per paycheck. Add a reasonable $24.50 for dental/vision, and I’m looking at $1,070+/month for employer-subsidized health insurance. With a $12k in-network deductible.
I haven’t compared all of the bells & whistles yet, but am I possibly overlooking something huge? When comparing the general plan info to a comparable plan through the ACA marketplace, it looks like I can find similar coverage for literally less than half of my employer-subsidized plan (their monthly rates are less than my semi-monthly ones).
I want to follow the rule of sharing avoiding personally identifying information, but I’d be happy to provide any requested details if asked. I’m just trying to figure out why this company’s coverage is twice what I’d pay through the ACA marketplace, and I’m coming up empty.
Thanks in advance for anyone able/willing to help!
