So this is a complicated situation. My spouse is 24, at the start of 2020 they were on their parents health insurance plan so they declined the health insurance offered by their job. Their parents both got laid off in December from the pandemic and as such insurance was terminated. They went and enrolled in a ACA plan, but only added themselves and neglected to add my spouse, or inform her she no longer had health insurance.
So here’s the situation. My spouse is a teacher. They’re enrolling in nursing school which requires that you have health insurance through out the whole period and receive up to date vaccinations and medical exams, all of which are way to expensive paying cash. They’re also not being renewed at school since nursing school is full time. So when school ends in may, and the special enrollment period also ends May 15th, and they lose they’re job based health insurance (if they were able to get it at all since it’s been past 60 days) they would no longer have insurance and would not be eligible for an ACA plan past the deadline (May 15) nor would they be eligible for nursing school. So that’s not the direction to go.
Can they enroll directly in a ACA plan so they don’t have to worry about coverage for the year? Income estimate for half of 2021 is ~20K. No dependents. If not, do you have any suggestions? Vaccines need to be done next month, so they need to do this fast.
